Body Image - Eating Disorders - August 13th

Approximately five per cent of the Australian population suffer from an eating disorder and they can be found in people as young as 7 and as old as 70.

Hear Me Raw talks to Nadia, a Counselling Psychologist and the education officer at Eating Disorders Victoria, and Samantha who has recovered from an Eating Disorder and is a volunteer at Eating Disorders Victoria.

  1. Hi,

I just listened to the eating disorder program on the radio, and i just wanted to say how fantastic it is to hear such a thoughtful discussion between caring people. Bravo!

As a thirty-something straight guy, perhaps not Joy FM's usual demographic, I have a direct relation to tonight's issue: My partner is a beautiful and courageous woman who has worked her way through an eating disorder. The discussion that EDV provide, and radio shows like your own, help make it possible for people to climb out of the dark hole. Your work is so important.

One thing that wasn't mentioned which i'd like to add is how much we as a community gain from people with eating disorders through their great struggle. It's easy to think of 'sufferers' and 'helpers', but the distinction isn't so clear, especially over time.

Obviously people with eating disorders need support, and rightly that takes an investment of care and attention. But people with eating disorders also learn a lot from the struggle and gain unique insights and capacities. This also needs to be appreciated.

People who go on journeys bring back gifts, and those living through an eating disorder are no exception. My partner is particularly sensitive, particularly intelligent and particularly strong precisely because she has gone through the eating disorder darkness. It is the 'sick' who can make the greater healers once nurtured.

Diamonds are born of dark places under high pressure, simultaneously hard and fragile; they sparkle like nothing on earth.

    Thanks again for the program,
    Dave from Carlton

  2. Hi Dave,

Thank you. Your kind, beautiful and inspirational letter shows the depth of beauty you see in your relationship and your partner.

Sharing our lives enriches others and you have certainly made Hear Me Raw feel privileged that we shared a part of your journey and experiences.

I also think that you are also to be celebrated, for not only acknowledging the beautiful, but by embracing it both during and beyond the depths of darkness.

    Sue
